On February 15th, 2010, I walked straight up to the Service Desk at Cornerstone, New Hope and said, “I want personal training three days a week starting tomorrow.” didn’t even asked for a tour. But I knew what I wanted and I really knew what I needed.

I had worked out in the past doing personal training at other gyms but when I became friends with the trainers, they didn’t push me hard anymore, and I didn’t feel like I had to work for anything. So I said to the girls, “I don’t want a best friend, I want a trainer.” The next day I was in the gym and Kristin put me on the arc trainer for about 10 minutes, to raise my heart rate. And let me tell you, I couldn’t even walk down the stairs when I was done because my legs were so heavy. If I didn’t know it before, I knew it then – I was SO out of shape!

About a year and a half ago my dad passed and it changed me. I was putting my kids and family in front of everything in my life. It was great to be with them, but I forgot to take care of myself. I had no energy, I hated how my clothes felt on my body. In that whole time, not once did I work out. There was no TIME!

After getting off that arc trainer I looked at Kristin, who was so “gung ho”, and then at myself, dead in the water, and I asked myself if I could even finish the session! Meanwhile, I had just told her the day before that I wanted three sessions a week. You can imagine how frustrating this was for me.

But Kristin just kept pushing and pushing me, and in three weeks I could feel my body coming back, my confidence coming back. She and I were still in that client-trainer relationship at that time and I think she knew that that’s what I needed. It was working.

By the fifth week Kristin recommended to Megan Steckbeckme that I try the Octagon class. I told her that she was NUTS. I had peeked in there before when Leah was teaching and the whole class was so supportive, but I didn’t think that I could do it. Kristin believed in me so she joined me for my first class – right by my side. I wasn’t alone. And let me tell you, it was amazing.

I came home that evening to dinner for my daughter’s 13th birthday and I simply felt like Wonderwoman. I was glowing. I did something I never thought I could do. My kids know that the gym is just part of my schedule and they LIKE it. Now I bring my girl with me.

My life was changing. I was making time for myself, seeing results, and feeling great. Why not see how far this can go? I changed my diet – lowered my alcohol & salt intake – I even started eating all of that stuff that grossed me out before like protein shakes and bars. It was tough but my motivation was the relief and confidence I felt walking into the Club and telling Kristin, “Hey! Listen to what I accomplished this week.” She would cheer me on and was there for me every step of the way.

She would come in on her days off to work out with me. We did yoga together and tried other classes at the Doylestown club. This is where the relationship changed. We had become friends but it was different. Our bond was in the happiness we felt from the results of fitness. I owed it to her to come in everyday because of this. I never called out sick. I was so surprised that the stereotype of women not supporting each other wasn’t true at all. We supported each other on everything.

Now I’m trying En Bloc with Felipe, outdoor classes on the Canal with Leah. I was there the day after Christmas with Felipe outside. Click here for the video. My next task is to try the 3-Day walk for Breast Cancer with Kristin in October; both of us are doing it for family members. When you walk into Cornerstone there are men and women that welcome you with open arms, it’s enveloping. If you’re gone for a few days and then return to the club everyone is asking, “Where did you go? Where were you?” I feel like I’m in Cheers and I should pull a bar stool up to the Service Desk when I walk in. It’s a big family here, so I come six days a week! This is an awesome environment and I’ve never been to another gym like this. I just love it.

Once you realize that you are the important person here it will change your life. Take that hour a day and integrate it into your life. Believe me, you’ll find time. Be serious about it and you will see results.

Meghan Thompson

Meghan Thompson I started working out with Tracey Kling four years ago. We first met when I was pregnant with my second child and I was looking for prenatal exercises to keep me in shape and prepare for a c-section and its recovery. She was a tremendous resource as both a trainer and a mother of two. I was anxious to get back to the gym after my son was born, and Tracey was patient with me and my inconsistent schedule. I learned exercises that I could do at home when my time at the gym was limited. I learned how to stretch properly to avoid injury and I learned how to work out efficiently and effectively.

This fall I was looking for a different way to spend time with Tracey and shake up my workout routine. I hesitantly signed up for her 5K workshop and started from the beginning! I was one of the non-runners in the group. We met 3 mornings each week at Central Park and worked on our form, breathing, speed and endurance. I found running outside to be much more challenging than the treadmills, but I loved the fresh air and camaraderie with the group. Tracey was a motivating force and encouraged our every step. She always had great suggestions, articles to read and even recipes to keep us eating clean.

At the end of the 6 week workshop, I ran a 5K! I was shocked and really excited. It worked! The consistent workouts and “homework” on the weekends had produced progress! Even more exciting was my timed mile. I shaved 1.5 minutes off of my time!

Then Tracey announced that she was teaching a “Beyond the 5K” class. I almost laughed at the thought of me, the non-runner, continuing this process to the 6 MILE mark. HA. I signed up. Six weeks later, in frigid temperatures, I completed 6 miles. Tracey encouraged the group to go public with our progress and we ran the Jingle Bell Run at Tyler State Park. I was so proud of myself crossing that finish line and completing 5.3 miles on a challenging course. I felt strong, focused and confident.

I have learned a lot about myself during this journey and I admire Tracey for her ability to open people’s minds and encourage them to stretch themselves. To try something new. To commit and succeed. Her positive energy is motivating and contagious and it is clear that she has the right job. She is meant to work with people and help them cross their own personal finish line.

Cheryl & Joel Berger

Cheryl & Joel Berger Cheryl: We had never exercised before, not in high school, college, or after. But when I was 31, Joel was about 35, we figured it was time to get in shape and do something for our bodies. At the time we lived in Yardley and started going to Newtown Athletic Club. It was 1981 and Jim was a trainer there; that’s when we first met. Actually, he was the first to ever put a weight in our hands!

Joel: At that time, there was no such thing as personal training. Jim would just do it as a favor…..giving tips and showing us what to do and how to do it. He would go to the members on the floor who he felt would gain benefit from it and those who were interested. And for people who had never trained before, we were definitely interested. Oh, I laugh about it now, but Jim actually trained me so hard one time – I got sick. We’re such good friends it didn’t even matter. But that shows how passionate he is and how passionate he can make others…..an ultimate commitment! He is always up for good competition. In fact, one time he challenged us all saying that he could do 100 dips and bet us all money on it. Of course he did it (he could have done more!) – and of course the money went to charity.

Cheryl: We loved Jim’s passion. We would ask him all the time, “Hey, when are you going to open your own gym?” And then one day, he did. We were there. There were no classes when it first opened – it was much smaller than it is now. But there was yoga and step (loved step!), and of course we kept lifting. We are both runners too. I started running to quit smoking; next thing you know, we were both running 5Ks.

Joel: Eventually we started biking. I bought Cheryl a mountain bike for her 40th Birthday even though she had never biked before (and I mean never!). So there I was, taking her around CB West, teaching her how to ride. Cheryl even said to me, “This thing is going in the garage,” but then she got the hang of it and loved it. We eventually bought road bikes around 1990 and soon joined a bike club. During one of our club’s trips in France, we heard a girl from California talking about Spinning. We thought to ourselves, what in the world is Spinning? That doesn’t sound like fun…..sitting in a room on a bike that doesn’t move? I mean, there we were biking the hills of France and she’s talking about Spinning! But when we got back, wouldn’t you know Jim had already started the program. You know the rest of the story…..we tried it once and were hooked.

Cheryl: We started trying other classes like Clark’s Zone. We would tell the Spinners, “Hey, you guys are crazy enough to try this class, give it a shot!” Now we try a lot of things, we like to mix it up. I’ve done Clark’s bootcamp at 6am (why does it always seem to rain at that time?), Kettlebells with Joanna, TRX, Peak Performance training…..all of these workouts were amazing because the trainers and instructors were so consistently good. I started personal training with Clark, too. He knows what you need and when you need it. He’d ask me if there was anything that I wanted to work on, always was very aware of what I could handle, and would still push me to accomplish more.

Joel: I also trained with Clark. When he was away I would train with Joanna – and she is wonderful. Now I train with her regularly. They are very different, in a good way, because you get two different workouts and personalities to experience. I love Kettlebells with Joanna – it is great for your core and building strength, but it reduces the stress on your ligaments and stretches you out, too. Great for balance and flexibility – which is something we’ve found to need more as we age. You know, injury takes much longer to recover from at 60 than at 30. That’s why it is so important that trainers stress the importance of form. It’s not just about how many reps you can do, it’s about doing them the right way.

Cheryl: That is very true. We also find relief through massage because it releases all of the lactic acid and stretches your muscles out. It is such a great benefit to have it here – we love Carol (and see her regularly)! For both mental and physical stress, massage is definitely a tool that anyone who trains should utilize. Cornerstone is a full body program, a physical and mental workout that we just love. For that reason we come often. Our friends ask us what we’re training for…..and we say life. The staff asks us if we’ll work here when we retire!

Joel: The bottom line is that the staff and members are quality people. Jim is an incredible leader with exceptional character…..his staff and members are an extension of him. Jim used to sleep at the club when it first opened! That’s devotion. When people are sincere and motivated, you look forward to seeing them. How can any other club beat that? It’s a rare thing to find and we’re happy to be a part of it.

One morning about 4 years ago, my doctor told me that I had to lose weight, and I thought, “Well, I’m never going back to him again!” But after years of watching my weight yo-yo, years of dealing with my bad knees and years of just not feeling myself, I finally decided I was just going to change. I had to! No more New Years Resolutions… I was almost 50 years old and I didn’t want to stay in that kind of shape. I had to better my life and better my health. And so that’s just what I did.

In 2007, I tried a diet and exercise weight management program at Cornerstone, Warrington (at that time it was the Lab). I teamed up with Lauren Lusignea to train with during the program. She was this vibrant young kid, who was really into everything we did – treadmill, bike, weights, she’d do anything! I could say, “Hey, let’s try swimming next week” and we would! It was just that easy. And she made it fun, sometimes even naming her workouts. She’d say, “MK, do you want to try Cindy or Fran today?” And I’d know that Fran was the tough one (just from the name – doesn’t it sound tough!?). We’d laugh and laugh, making the workout so much fun. I knew that I had to join the club, become a member and continue to train with Lauren. I’ve been with her ever since.

But why stop there? There are so many things to try. I’ve tried Spinning, swimming, Zumba, personal training and workshops. One program I really enjoyed was a hybrid class with Bryan where we’d spend half of the time Spinning and half strength training. Another was Biggest Loser, with Matt and Sabrina. (Sabrina is a killer in the gym! She really knows how to work you out and always keeps an eye out for you.)

My latest feat was the Triathlon Newbies workshop with Sue Andiorio. It was 13 weeks of running, biking, swimming and strength training, all combined in one program. At the end we competed in a triathlon! The group was women ranging in age from 19 to 52. We all had our own little glitches to figure out and hurdles to leap. For me swimming was the hardest part – I just thought to myself, “I’m not getting pulled into that boat!”

But I made it through. I even biked farther than I had to. I remember looking around and thinking, “Wow, there’s no one around me – go MK!”, when really I had just gone too far. Oh well, it felt great! As I neared the finish line, my feet were so sore. I saw a girl (a bit younger than I) from my workshop, Abigail, running closer to me – she started running faster! I said, “No way! I’m going to beat her,” and so I started running faster. Of course she beat me but timing didn’t matter, it was such an amazing feeling. The best part of the whole race was when I did reach the end, Lauren, Bryan and my family were all standing there cheering me on! It was so wonderful to have an entire support group there for me waving me across the finish line.

I’ll try anything and I’m always up for something new. I guess I just like everything because there is always something different or exciting happening. And look at me now – I can do pushups, run 5Ks, hold plank and do dead lifts (yep!). I couldn’t do any of that before. Next I’ll have to try Pilates Reformer, which just moved to Warrington from Doylestown. Oh, and yoga, too – the new room is beautiful. I’ve also enrolled in Sabrina’s new workshop, The Early Bird Special. See what I mean? There are just too many good things going on here to not try all of them!

You know, people come up with excuses – work goes late, dinner has to be made, but if you can just get over that hump, you’d be amazed at what you can do and how much you’ll enjoy it. I’m trying to get my husband involved, not that I’d want to out – do him or anything but just to get him to see how great it all is. You get compliments from your friends, you wake up feeling great – I don’t mind coming in at 6am, just to get that feeling. I come all the way from Ottsville just to get this feeling!

You just need to go and try it, try something new. The staff is certified, they’re here for you and they’re wonderful people, from the girls at the service desk to all of the trainers and instructors. It was such a smooth transition when The Lab changed over to Cornerstone because the people were so caring and fun. There’s a little younger crowd coming in now too, which is so inspiring to see.

I’m very thankful for everyone here. You walk in and everyone says hello, everyone knows your name – members and staff. Everyone chats and laughs and has such a good time. It’s so nice watching people bettering themselves. I say – more power to ya!

When I moved to New Hope, I immediately started looking for a local gym to join. Naturally, when my friend had recommended Cornerstone, I took her word, toured, and joined. Although I had tried personal training and classes in the past, I had some very bad lower back issues, and so I chose just to do cardio. I was always told that I had to strengthen my core, and I knew that, but I was just too afraid that I would hurt my back again – and that pain can be debilitating.

While I was working out on the cardio equipment one day, I noticed Felipe training some clients. To be honest, I was half intrigued, but also half intimidated! It looked like they were working so hard, doing moves I had never done before. The intrigue finally beat the intimidation in August of 2009, when I took advantage of a special on personal training the Cornerstone was running. Why not give it a try, I thought?

I’ve been working with Felipe ever since. Remarkably, I have developed an amazing core, despite my prior back problems. And it wasn’t from sit-ups either! Felipe would have me do all sorts of abdominal exercises with the medicine ball, with machines… nothing ‘traditional’. It was always something new and exciting. I even worked up the courage to try the Octagon and run in the Dash for the Axe 5K!

With all of the new things I was trying, Felipe paid close attention to my personal needs, and would never push me to do something that would put my back in jeopardy. I feel such great trust with him for that reason. He got me beyond my hesitations that were both physical and mental – the physical pain, but also the fear of hurting it even more.

That trust became extremely important to me in January of 2010 when I found out that I was pregnant! I was in amazing physical and mental shape, but knew the challenges and possible complications that come with pregnancy. I didn’t want to gain weight – I just lost it! I didn’t want to lose energy – I just gained it! So, I asked my doctors about exercising during pregnancy. It was funny because they didn’t really encourage or discourage it, they were mainly focused on nutritional advice. I was somewhat surprised, so I decided to prove to them that I could do it.

Those first three months were TOUGH! Believe me – it wasn’t always easy getting myself to come in. But after I did, I felt so much better. As my body started to change, Felipe continued to modify and tailor the exercises every week to accommodate me. The most important thing, recommended by both my doctor and Felipe, was to keep tabs on my heart rate. As long as that was being monitored, I could really continue with whatever I wanted. I was doing the Octagon weekly all the way up until 6 months through my pregnancy! But I couldn’t do everything, I saw people doing the alligator walk and would secretly laugh, thinking, “thank god I’m pregnant!”

I was so dedicated and motivated to have a regimented workout all the way through the 9 months – so much so that my husband was a little skeptical of how capable I was of doing so much! He actually came in and watched me out of curiosity. But I had no concerns because I felt confident, strong, and healthy. (I haven’t had a single problem with my back for almost a year.) My husband must think I’m crazy because I’m trying to schedule when I’ll be able to get back after maternity leave. I talk about it all of the time.

This has been a big year in my life… in fact, my husband and I just settled on our new house in September. My primary concern during that process? Being able to continue at Cornerstone, of course. And that is no joke! We’re staying local, I made sure of it.

I just have to say, I love Cornerstone. I’ve been a member at a lot of different gyms and nothing compares. Everyone is just so friendly and so nice, the classes are great… and Felipe is undoubtedly amazing. I’m looking forward to trying Elite Fitness Coaching, his new team training program, when I get back. I’m sure it’s going to be great because it utilizes all of his strengths in training. And because he’s a hot commodity! But I’ll have to wait until this whole baby thing is over… then he or she (to be determined!) will definitely be in line for CornerKids!

Danchak Family

Danchak Family Michael Danchak:
Who’s the new gym on the block? That’s what I asked myself when Cornerstone opened its second location in New Hope in 2006. I was training at a different gym at the time but I decided to check Cornerstone out anyways – curiosity, you know? And when I went there it exceeded my expectations. Everyone was just so nice. So I joined! At first I really only wanted Spinning. I took classes with Julie, Teresa and Gina, and I was so captivated by their energy. They coordinated the ride with the music so well that it became a unified symphony of mental, physical and musical rhythm. I could spin all day but I knew how much the club had to offer so I started looking into other classes. I tried Zumba, Pilates, the fitness floor, Octagon, personal training, BTS and I didn’t just try them – I fell in love with all of them! I found myself in the ultimate cross-training program that I ran for myself (with the help of the instructors of course!). I couldn’t say enough about this place. One day I mentioned it to my daughter Michele. I told her I was heading to Cornerstone and suggested that she come check it out with me. Somewhat reluctantly, she agreed to do so.

Michele:
Well I have to say, everyone really was so nice. From the second I walked in I could tell you, this is not some body-builders-only gym. This was a health club. I sort of realized what my dad had been talking about all this time. To get acclimated, I tried some of the weights and did some personal training with Kristin. I knew I had to get it in gear when I got invited to my friends wedding which was creeping up – only 5 months away at the time. I was the maid of honor! All I could think about was all those pictures that I would be in and I didn’t want to feel uncomfortable. This was a real motivator for me. I had to lose weight. What was my weapon of choice? ZUMBA! David is genius – although it wasn’t that easy for me in the beginning, he kept a close eye on me, showed me the moves and made sure I had fun. He recently sent me this email: “I am delighted to have watched you bloom this past year. From a reluctant, semi-participant who felt she could not quite do Zumba to a vibrant, active, caring, interesting, interested TEAM player with a mean Salsa who is always there to assist whenever she can. What a transformation.” To think that just a year prior I had so many medical issues with my feet (surgery on both), boggles my mind. There I was dancing… I just let loose and moved around as much as I could – even if I didn’t know the moves, who cared? I was dancing and moving, there was nothing to lose. Except 5 inches. Yep, by the time the wedding rolled around I had lost a full 5 inches off of my waist. I had to hold my strapless dress up by clenching it between my arms and my body! Everyone said how great I looked. It was phenomenal. I didn’t even notice it until I saw the pictures. It was like I was a different person. I can definitely attribute my own weight issues to the genetics of my family, as my dad, myself and my daughter have all had our struggles.

Brittney:
I’ve gained weight, then lost it, then gained it back. At my heaviest I was 187 – which is not easy for a teenager. My family definitely supports me though. And earlier this year my granddad brought me in to Cornerstone with him. I tried Yoga and really loved it. But I was walking through the club one day and saw this crazy dance class. It was Zumba! It took me a little while even to just get in the door to Stephanie’s class, but once I did – wow. How cool! I don’t claim to be good at it either – my family says I have two left feet. Ha! Soon I was taking Personal Training sessions with Nick who helped me push myself to where I needed to go. When I lost 10 pounds in 5 weeks I knew this was no joke!

Michael:
It was fantastic to see the changes in my daughter and granddaughter and myself of course. I lost 27 lbs and 4 inches in a year – but even better? I’m in amazing shape. My core is stronger than ever. I can do the Octagon 3 times a week, my heart rate has dropped dramatically, I’m healthier than ever. And now that we’re all here, we take classes together! If we had to choose three things that really impacted us it would be Zumba, Nick and the staff. Zumba for the fun, feel-good workout. Nick for his dedication to each of us individually. And the staff for their welcoming nature. I once heard a friend of mine say that they were having a hard time trying to buy a new house. When I asked them why they said, “Because it has to be less than 5 minutes from Cornerstone.” It’s no secret that Cornerstone has a contagious effect which spreads across all the departments, all of the staff and all of the members. We’re so thankful to be here. Cornerstone has given my family a second family. This is what we enjoy together and are proud of together!

Suzanne Herst

Suzanne Herst I don’t always love going to the gym but I DO love going to my personal trainer, Bryan Whiteside. Although I’ve never really been a gym rat, I still care about my body and staying healthy. So instead of trying to schedule the time to go workout everyday (which is incredibly difficult with my demands at work), I invest in 2 or 3 solid days a week with Bryan.

Actually, I tried personal training at home years before I joined Cornerstone. But after 3 months of hard work, I found that I just wasn’t enjoying the time, or the money, that I was spending. I just didn’t click with the trainer or the workouts, so I stopped.

But when I started to experience injuries in my back and shoulder, my doctor recommended that I go to physical therapy. I figured, why not go back to the personal training instead? If I could get a little rehabilitation and get into better shape, then it would be killing two birds with one stone!

My sister trains with Bryan and she recommended him to me. Although I had not always had the best experience with personal training in the past, I felt as though I was in a better position to make a commitment both monetarily, mentally, and physically than before. So I decided to give it a try.

And I am so happy that I did. Bryan tailors each and every exercise to my abilities and limitations. He completely took into consideration my injuries, especially my back, and never pushed me to do anything that I was uncomfortable with.

That’s not to say that he didn’t push me at all though! He just adjusted the move, was patient with my progress, and in time gave me the confidence to do things I’d never done before. I love working out with the straps, you can do anything with those! I can now do multiple sets of planks because my core is stronger than ever. My flexibility is incredibly improved, which is also very important for my core. Not to mention, I lost 2 inches off my waist – which seems like just a bonus compared to the improvements made to my health and well-being.

I find now that my strength is better and that I have more stamina at work. This physical strength has helped me mentally as well. I can accomplish little goals, even if I need assistance, which add up and give me faith to accomplish bigger goals. Now, Bryan even gives me custom workouts to take home and try out on my own.

It’s a funny story but Bryan’s grandmother was actually my Girl Scout leader and she was great! As coincidental as that sounds, I know that it takes a certain type of person to be that compassionate and dedicated to others, and they both share those qualities. And if that isn’t enough, we’re both Penn State graduates, too (go State!). It is almost if I was meant to train with him.

I am so grateful to train with Bryan. He is always bubbly and upbeat. It is never a competition with him, I never feel intimidated, and I never feel uncomfortable. Because he is so down to earth and focused on me and my goals, I just feel like I fit in – like I’m never out of place. And even on the bad days, when I don’t want to sit through traffic and I just want to go home, I know that he is there waiting for me. We have a commitment to each other, and that is very important to me.

It’s no secret that personal training isn’t cheap. But there is absolutely no price that you can put on your health. This is a luxury that I give myself for a good reason: to feel better each day.

Mike Mastrangelo

Mike Mastrangelo I came to Cornerstone in 2004 when they ran the Get Active America Program. Other than playing football in high school, I really had no other experience with exercise. I needed to start somewhere. At the time, I didn’t work out, didn’t pay much attention to my diet, and I was a heavy smoker. Two packs of cigarettes a day for 40 years.

Just as I started to get in a regular workout routine, I found out that I needed abdominal surgery. This would only be the first of many set backs I’ve had in the past five years. After I recovered, I knew it was time to get back to exercising and regain that strength that I had now lost. I did get myself back into great shape, focusing on cardio training. Even my sons, who came to work out with me a few times, were impressed with my stamina. They crushed me in the weight room, but at least I had something on them!

Time goes by, you’re on – you’re off. I kept up with working out when there was time. Then, in 2009, my doctor told me I had developed emphysema. I knew I had to finally give up smoking. Working out was now no longer an option, but something I had to do to keep and improve the lung capacity that I had left. Sometimes, it was so hard to just breathe. But, by working on the treadmill and elliptical, I immediately started to lose weight and breathe easier. I had lost 30 pounds and wanted to keep going.

But I hit that wall – the plateau. I was so frustrated. I pushed myself hard for two weeks, going to the scale, and kept seeing the same number I had started out with. I was ready to throw in the towel, going to the Service Desk and actually telling them that I quit – when they suggested that I try personal training.

That’s when I teamed up with Adrianna. She had me doing all sorts of exercises I never would’ve even thought of before. She would show me a jumping move, and then expect me to do it. I thought, “Are you nuts? There’s no way I can do that”. And then I would do it – I could do it. I went from doing 8 push-ups to sets of 30, and from 15 sit-ups to sets of 100.

Adrianna pushed me – and I liked and needed to be pushed. She gave me the confidence to be better than I ever was. She believed that I could do it, so I believed I could do it. I was finally surpassing my plateau. I started going to Cornerstone’s nutrition classes at the TreeHouse and learned a whole new world of eating – when to eat, what to eat, ways to improve my health through eating all from Marie. This was all new to me. I was turning into a runner, losing weight and gaining back my health.

I ran my first 5K that year. I also I quit smoking and although I couldn’t run it all, I finished in 43 minutes and felt a great sense of accomplishment. I trained and ran another 5K, beating my time. So I figured why not train for a mini-triathlon?

Then, I broke my leg. Another set back! As soon as my doctor gave me the go-ahead, I got back in to Cornerstone with a boot on my leg and ready to train. And two months later while running on the treadmill, I broke my leg again. This time I also tore my meniscus.

As it turned out I had osteoporosis. I started medication to help build the strength in my bones, but I lost about 8 months total of training. Life is all about set backs right? I had my mind set on a goal and I was going to reach it. Sometimes getting myself in the door at the club is the hardest part. Once I’m inside everything clicks and I always feel better. Adrianna was ready to help.

Now I can run a 5K in 30 minutes and I’m getting even faster.

Although I’ve had a lot of set backs, I’m proud of myself for not giving up and of the accomplishments I’ve made in fitness. I feel good about myself physically and mentally. As a business owner (The Tile Studio in Doylestown) my stress level is more manageable and my energy level is consistent. I just want to keep setting the bar higher & higher physically. That mini triathlon is still on my list, and I will get there!

My latest goal is running the next 5K in June with my 21 year old son and maybe even beating him :)

Frank Lettieri

Frank Lettieri One day last year I had an epiphany… I realized that I felt much older than my age. I was tired, slow, sluggish and not feeling like the kind of young guy (at 27) that I thought I was. I hadn’t really worked out since I was on the track & field team in high school, aside from occasionally playing recreational sports, and even then I got winded pretty easily.

I am 5’10″ and at my highest weight I was 258 pounds, I had a 42″ waist and I was heading towards a life of certain health issues. It’s hard to believe how easy it is to get to that point. Maybe I just didn’t look in the mirror much but I never had been concerned with my weight before. After a few years of life changes – going to college, getting in and then getting out of a long term relationship, some serious personal family issues – it becomes pretty easy to put everything else first and yourself last. When you’re down and stressed out, it seems impossible to change things so the cycle just continues.

I think I got lucky. I finally just knew that I had to do something for myself – take a step towards getting my life back in balance and feeling better about the man in the mirror. One week, I toured a few local gyms, I even got a couple guest passes, but nothing clicked. The moment I walked into Cornerstone, I just knew it was the right place for me. I needed a place that felt comfortable, someplace that wasn’t intimidating and that would welcome someone like me, inexperienced and needing direction. I didn’t even ask for a guest pass at Cornerstone, I just joined and I knew in my heart it would become like a “home” for me.

My first week, I trained with Ryan and Matt. Needless to say they totally kicked my butt. I remember hardly being able to climb the steps at work that week. As hard as the first week was, I felt determined and they both helped me feel confident that I could do it. That first month I lost 15 pounds or so which gave me even more motivation and drive.

Although I haven’t been able to utilize personal training much since I joined, Ryan and Matt had helped me create a routine that worked and I have kept with it since day one. Since then I’ve lost a steady amount of weight and Ryan always checks up on me, pushes me to work harder if he thinks I’m slacking off. One time, he had me convinced that I was “wimping out” on shoulder presses and loaded up my machine. I did 8 very long and difficult reps only to find out he was messing with me and didn’t think there was any way I could even do one! A bit of a shining moment for me… HA! However, this little trick reminded me that I could not let myself get comfortable if I wanted results.

After 10 months, I now weigh 212 pounds and I have a 36″ waist. That’s 46 pounds down, 6 pant sizes and a ton of confidence and stamina to boot! I’m a musician, and recently was able to drum my way through a 6 hour recording session. That never would’ve happened before. A few months ago, I went on a trip to B.C. to do some sea kayaking. The energy and strength I now have, made it like a whole new experience. I eat healthier now and make time to exercise at least 5 days a week.

This is one of the best purchases I have made in my life and I would implore anyone to make sure fitness is a part of their life. Remember your body is a temple and it influences so much more than just your physical appearance.

I want to thank Nicole, who toured me back in June last year and made me feel comfortable and excited about the possibilities that the club offered me. I have to thank Ryan for kicking my butt every time he has the chance and making sure I’m staying motivated and doing something new. Really, everyone at the club – they know my name when I come in, check up with me on the floor, notice my progress and make it so that I always look forward to getting back in. Without a doubt, this has made a difference in my success and my life, and a nice addition to those who I now consider friends! Thank you all and God bless!

WHY I NEED TO GO TO THE GYM! Anne Scarazzo Anne is showing off her “special reservation sign”, made as a funny by Jim for her favorite table.

While filing out the survey for Cornerstone, I started to see a pattern in my answers. Sure, I go to the gym to keep fit like everyone else, but there is a definite reason why I chose Cornerstone as my health club…..the people!

For me, there is just a happiness that hits you when you walk in the door. The front desk, the “Face of Cornerstone”, really makes a difference. I can honestly say that that is the nicest “cast of characters” that I have ever seen assembled! They are helpful, friendly, funny, and ALWAYS in a great mood.

Even when I call to sign up for a class, it doesn’t change their positive attitude. I hang up & usually have a smile on my face. Their job is not easy. I have been witness to people not treating them kindly on several occasions. They are able to put that behind them and treat the next person like nothing ever happened. I wish I had that talent.

In class (I take Zone classes) people are pretty jovial and there is a lot of laughter from the members and instructors (even when people are dying from exhaustion). When working out on the equipment, even if I have my iPod on, people (again, members & staff) will shoot you a smile or a little wave, or make eye contact in a friendly way of just saying hello.

I have to admit, I am not always the nicest person I can be. I have a demanding job and I feel like I am often torn in many directions like everyone else! But that is really not an excuse. I know this sounds corny, but I find that when I go to the club, it actually puts me in a better mood from being around such nice staff and members! I can go to Cornerstone in a horrible mood, go in and give my number to the person at the desk, and instantly, I feel a smile coming on! Even if I want to be mad at the world, I CAN’T!

It’s very much like an attitude adjustment going there. When I leave, I find myself holding the door for someone, or letting someone go in front of me in traffic. I am embarrassed to say these are things I don’t always consciously do. And I know other people feel the same. You just can’t be unkind when you’re in or around Cornerstone!

Often times if I am in a bad, stressed out mood, my husband Bob will nicely suggest a trip the gym :)

I’ve never had a problem losing weight or gaining it and then losing it again and gaining it back. I’ve pretty much lost and gained the same 50 pounds over and over throughout my adult years. I grew up “the fat kid” and sometimes felt as though that’s what I would always be. Two years ago I decided enough of this. The weight yo-yo was making me crazy. I needed to take a new action to be sure that not only would I lose the weight but I would keep it off. I joined Cornerstone and then proceeded to make the monthly payment without entering the facility. Finally I decided to actually GO AND USE THE CLUB.

I started running again (actually walk/run because it had been so long) but one of the bigger changes I made this time around was getting more involved in group activities. The early morning crowd in the Octagon is great! That class creates accountability for me and I don’t want to let anyone (including myself) down. Though I must admit, I joke with Leah that the only reason I do the Octagon is because I really hate stomach crunches. At the end of that class, like it or not, you’ve done a ton of stomach/core work and it’s over! I also try to cross train by getting into The TreeHouse and taking yoga or pilates classes with Bob.

All of this has not only helped me lose weight (I love the way my Michael Raymondclothes fit), increase my energy, and feel so much better, but it has also helped my tennis game ten-fold. I have played tennis for about 15 years and always seem to stay at the same level of play. Currently my opponents have said that I am moving faster and hitting with more power.

I ran my first marathon this year. My 26 year old nephew convinced me to do it along with him. We ran the Philadelphia Broad Street Run in May to begin our training process and ran exactly what we trained – running the 10 miles with a 10 minute/mile pace. Then I completed The Philadelphia marathon (26.2 miles) at an 11 minute/mile pace – again running what I trained. My time might have been slower if it wasn’t for a very motivating surprise at the 6 mile mark. Leah & Cody from Cornerstone came down to the marathon to surprise and cheer me on! At first I had tears in my eyes so maybe I lost a little time there! My only connection with them was from the club, but they came to see me through my first marathon. I saw them at many of the mile markers, and if it wasn’t for Leah’s motivational “10 seconds” (like during those early morning Octagon classes) I don’t know if I would have made it through miles 23-26. My new goal now is to better my time in 2010 at the Broad Street Run. Don’t tell Leah… I can’t even imagine what she will put me though to make sure I can do that!

My advice to anyone who would ask is to make fitness a priority. Find a way to balance your life, work and your health. I have to schedule it in like anything else of importance in my life. My commute most days for work is greater than 2 hours each way. To balance work time, family time and fitness isn’t always easy but I schedule it and I stick to it. Being at Cornerstone where I am challenged and kept interested by so many different activities and kept going by the support around me has made a big difference. As a fan of Project Runway I say “Make It Work!”

My story is not about a major change in my life through exercise but more about an “evolution” to my exercise program over the years.

Most of my life, I’ve been active. I grew up in Philly playing ball; street ball, basketball, half ball, box ball, wire ball, whatever kind of ball we could play. I didn’t play any school sports so exercise for sports was not something ingrained in me growing up. I majored in accounting at LaSalle University and played sax in a wedding/party band on the weekends. Our band was called “The Outlaws” so there’s something for those who know me to laugh about!

I moved to Doylestown in 1977 and was teaching at Bucks County Community College when we had our children (Ed, Mary Beth and Karen) and later, proudly, 3 grandchildren. I have been fortunate enough to have a very understanding wife, Betsy (a necessary shout out here!) I started playing weekly basketball with the guys in my neighborhood and took a ski trip with them every winter. Keeping myself in shape to be able to play basketball and ski was my motivation at the time.

When my oldest son was in grade school I took him to sign up for karate to help with self esteem, discipline and sense of pride. It truly is a great developmental tool for kids. He asked me to take it with him and of course I did. Eight months later he stopped doing karate and I kept going. I was 40 years old at the time.

About the same time, I started my own business as a Registered Investment Advisor and a Certified Financial Planner practitioner. I couldn’t do the 3 times a week sessions with all that was going on in my life so it took me forever to get my black belt. 19 years total! But I enjoyed every part of the journey and was happy that the CB Karate Club supported me going at my own pace. Now I teach karate at Cornerstone to 7-12 year old white belts (beginners).

One of the benefits of karate is keeping up your flexibility. You do a lot of stretching. I played basketball till I was 52 (knee surgery changed that) and I noticed that compared to some of the other guys, my degree of flexibility was much better. It helped with basketball, and now, I see improvement in a newer hobby, golf.

I’ve been a member here since the first year the club opened. I know my workload, my tendencies and my schedule. I need to have a routine, and coming to the club right after work keeps me from ever missing out on exercise time. My son, Ed Jr, and my daughter, Mary Beth, not only work with me, but are Cornerstone members as well. So when my daughter says to me at the end of the work day, “I’ll see you at the gym,” I know that if I don’t show up I’ll never hear the end of it – another incentive for not skipping a workout! I’m comfortable here; I’ve made a lot of friends and really enjoy the “after work Strive group.” We’ve been taking that class for about 10 years now. Our group has serenaded goodbyes to staff, competed with them, and had our own little outings sometimes involving physical stuff -like bowling and dancing- but we excel at the dinner and drinking events!

What I notice most and enjoy about Cornerstone is that people here are younger than their age. I’m currently 66 years old and I practice and teach karate, play golf, do the Strive classes and my own personal workouts. In life I often meet people who are inactive and appear older than I, only to later find out they are younger. I believe working out, staying active and finding activities that challenge you mentally and physically, like karate and golf, help you to stay healthy and young. Going to Cornerstone where you meet fun people helps keep you in shape while giving you the motivation to get to the gym each day and do something you enjoy.

I’m happy to say that with how I feel, I am still that 25 year old who might even be able to take you on in basketball! For a couple minutes anyway!

I love the line in a Toby Keith song – “I’m not as good as I once was but I’m as good once as I ever was.”

I began my weight loss journey in September, 2008 at age 44, after struggling for many years to get the weight off that I gained during the pregnancies of my two children. I gained over 80 pounds with my first child and only was able to take off 40 of that throughout the years. I decided in September, that it was long over due to get this weight off, realizing how unhealthy I had become. I had been successful in taking off some of the weight but kept putting on and off pounds over the years.Erin Zezzo

I began eating a low fat, high fiber, high protein diet and began exercising several times per week. I trained once per week with Lisa Andersen at Cornerstone and began to strengthen my body. Lisa helped me to realize that when I was at the gym, I was not working as hard as I should. After gaining some confidence, I started taking classes and found myself in the gym an average of 5 to 6 hours per week. I mixed up strength training with cardio workouts. In order to lose the weight however, I had to mentally keep myself engaged in eating right and exercising regularly. Dieting alone did not do the trick. I had to combine healthy eating habits with a disciplined exercise program. Throughout the months, Lisa kept me focused and trained me hard, well past my capability at times. With this, I gained strength and confidence and have taken off 38 lbs since September. I am averaging a 1 pound per week weight loss and have gone from a size 16-18 to a size 6.

I took my measurements after losing 10 pounds and realized how big I had become. After losing an additional 28 lbs (for a total of 38 pounds) I had decreased my chest by 5″, waist by 8.5″, hips by 8″, mid-thigh by 4″ and upper arms by 2″. I still have another 12 pounds to go until I hit my goal. I wanted to extend a thank you to everyone who helped me at Cornerstone in accomplishing what I have so far. So many words of encouragement have been sent my way and that alone has helped keep me on track. I will never go back to that other person. I have changed my habits and feel great!

One more thing… I had my first physical since the weight loss and my blood work was off of the charts! The doctor told me what ever I was doing to keep it up and we will see you in three years! My dentist saw me recently and when I went back a few weeks later he too had started exercising and practicing yoga. So glad I can inspire some people since many people at Cornerstone inspire me!

As a life-long athlete I didn’t need motivation to exercise when I joined Cornerstone in 2006. I’m one of those lucky people who actually enjoys a rigorous workout. I love what exercise does for my attitude, outlook and ability to concentrate.

As a past member of other health clubs, I found them to be just a place to work out. Accordingly, this was all I expected at Cornerstone but I found so much more!

First of all, I’m delighted with the sense of community here. I have a group of “gym friends” whom I look forward to seeing in classes and enjoy bumping into around town.

I also enjoy the variety of workouts here. I’m a competitive tennis player, and a former marathon runner. I’ve always done workouts to support my tennis or running, and some of those workouts aren’t so much fun. Here, I can enjoy the music in Spin classes and the shared “pain” in Octagon. I’ve done some step, BTS and abs classes too. I’ve enjoyed some great personal training sessions with Leah, who builds variety into every workout.

I think the biggest surprise for me has been how much I’ve come to enjoy yoga. I’ve always known of the benefits of yoga, especially for avid athletes. I’ve just never been able to quiet myself enough to get much out of it. But walking into the TreeHouse is like being transported to another world. I’m not only able to slow down, I get centered and focused, and leave there with an amazing sense of well-being. Walking out of yin yoga is like coming out of a great massage!

As I understand it, Jim and Eileen’s mission with the Cornerstone clubs is to create a healthier community. Consequently, they’ve created an environment where we aren’t just customers, we’re members. They take the Cornerstone culture very seriously. They hire carefully and they instill the culture we have here with every staff member. I just love it. In this age of belt-tightening, I’d give up a lot before I’d give up my Cornerstone membership.

I don’t know how long I’ve been a member of Cornerstone. Probably less than two years. But I know the benefits I received from membership took a sharp upward climb in quality when I began working with trainer Marie Stryjak. She is the best trainer I have ever been privileged to work with.

My experience includes trainers at different branches of LA Fitness and the Center Club. Some were good, some were not. None approached Marie. Her own extraordinary fitness was a constant inspiration. As was her invariably positive, cheerful attitude. She has a knack, instinctive or learned, for knowing how to motivate. She was particularly successful in getting me to put out the maximum effort in every training session. She is generous with praise and helpful with hints on form and tips on how to do it better. During my two or three months with her I increased my daily solo workout schedule, probably doubled it, to raise my strength and endurance level so I could perform well in the sessions with her.

My blood pressure last March was 128 over 85. Yesterday it was 107 over 80. My upper body strength has practically doubled. When I started with her I could manage 6 pushups, now I can do 17 and my endurance has improved tremendously.

What I particularly appreciated was her knowledge of how to tailor our workouts to my specific needs. My weak upper body and core strength have been vastly improved through combined aerobic workouts and muscle enhancing work. I’ll be able to carry her training methods into my own workouts as I continue at Cornerstone.

I always appreciate the good will and helpful attitude of the staff both clubs. I am based at the Doylestown club and find that reflects in a friendly atmosphere among the members.

I vote for Marie as Trainer of the Year! I had suffered some physical disabilities before I began training with her and felt I was on the edge of either declining fitness or regaining the strength and vigor that allowed me to run the LA Marathon in 1990. There are no marathons in my future. I dont have enough knee cartilage left. But thanks to Marie, I think I turned the corner on decline and I now expect to stay fit for a long time.

Thank you for providing such a level of excellence at your clubs.

Sincerely,

I am here in Mechanicsburg with almost 300 boxes surrounding me, my kids running around at my feet and one of the most predominant thoughts in my mind is my last couple weeks spent with you all at Cornerstone. Words cannot express how much I cherished and appreciated the thought, effort and sincerity behind the many kind gestures directed towards me and my departure.

My time with you all at Cornerstone was very special to me. I feel we fell into our relationship with each other at just the right time for us all. During my time with you, I feel I grew as an instructor but even more as a person. I was enriched by the countless member interactions and relationships. I am a different person now. On my last day at the surprise party Joanna organized, I had a student come to me with tears in her eyes and tell me “…my husband wanted me to thank you on his behalf because he is so happy to see me enjoy something this much.” I will never forget that.

BTS was and is my baby. I love the program and I am so thankful that I got to share that passion with you and our members. You and the entire staff there provided the most awesome venue for me to express myself through my teaching and fitness. I will never forget it or your faces and smiles along with the motivation and support I felt every time I walked though your doors.

Zumba changed me. It brought me back into the mainstream of fitness and life in general. It made me feel like I was a “player” again and I really tried to infuse that emotion into my teaching. My beginning there with you will be emblazed upon my memory forever. I felt so free to express myself once I got started. Again, the members are wonderful!

If at all possible, please share this message in part or whole with the crew and/or members so they all know how much I loved being a part of the team. I miss you all already.

As I move forward I will draw upon these experiences to maintain my confidence and belief in what I have to share. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity and then for supporting me the way you did.

All the very best to you…

I have been personal training with Mary Kroszner (pictured left) for about a year and a half. I started training with her when I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter.

I decided to train with Mary because I enjoyed her spinning classes over the previous 3 years. Mary is a very charismatic, fun-loving and motivational instructor. Her spin classes have great music, great workouts and a very fun atmosphere. As far as any group exercise instructor I have experienced over the years, Mary K. is by far the best. Not only does she make exercise fun, she is truly an excellent motivator. Mary makes a personal connection with ALL of her attendees and clients. She is constantly inspiring guests to strive to do better and giving them the self confidence they need to succeed at excelling in their own fitness goals. She even sends email of encouragement to her class and clients on a regular basis. All of these things make people come back to Cornerstone and fill her classes continuously.

I chose Mary as my trainer for all of these reasons. It was very important to me to remain in good shape throughout my entire pregnancy. I couldn’t have succeeded without Mary. Not only did she help me stay fit, she genuinely cared about my needs and concerns. Every week she would email me before our session to assess how I was feeling that week (along with where I was in my pregnancy) and change her program to meet my needs. She stayed in contact with me through email after each session as well to see how I was feeling. I have never experienced an instructor and trainer who cared so much about her client’s needs and personal fitness goals.

Throughout my entire pregnancy I remained healthy. Thanks to Mary I didn’t have a single pregnancy related complication and felt great everyday. Mary also helped me meet my fitness goals post-pregnancy. I was back in my jeans a lot sooner than my first daughter and I owe it all to a trainer who cared enough to listen to every concern and need and put great efforts into helping me meet my all of goals.

I am the strongest I have ever been physically and mentally. She has given me the wonderful gift of health and self confidence to inspire me to strive to a higher fitness level. I hope that she can do the same for more Cornerstone members and potential personal training clients.

I was a member of Cornerstone years ago and attempted to get myself into shape, lose some weight and feel fit by coming into the gym and doing my own exercise routine.

I soon discovered I had an abundance of optimism, but was sorely lacking in discipline and endurance. I started cutting my exercise routines short. That voice in my head would tell me I didn’t need to do 30 minutes on the treadmill, I could get away with just 20 minutes. It did not take long or me to skip coming to the gym completely and before long I was dropping my membership.

This past year I started having chest pains, some severe, so I went to see my cardiologist. After reviewing my family history (my father died of second heart attack at age 67) he recommended a cardiac catheterization.

As I was lying on the operating table in Doylestown Hospital cardiac care facility, I recall the surgeon telling me he had news for me in the middle of the procedure. I expected the worst. He told me my arteries were open and clear and that my heart looked like the heart of a man 20 years younger than my age. Needless to say I was shocked. He also told me I needed to lose 30 pounds and get into shape to have my body catch up with the condition of my heart!

On December 1, 2008 I rejoined Cornerstone Gym. This time I took advantage of the classes offered at the gym and decided to make up for my lack of discipline and 58 years of habit with not exercising. I joined spinning class. I felt awkward, out of place and too fat to be on those bicycles. To my skewed eyes everyone else looked fit, trim and in shape. I felt like I was pretending to be spinning. Thankfully, the instructor, Susan Silverman, kept reminding me to just come for the hour and do my best. For some reason I listened to her and kept showing up for class. I discovered that by simply showing up in class, getting on the bike, keeping moving and do my part, Susan made it happen. It worked for me.

Next, I discovered Pilates Reformer class. Mike Zelesko introduced me to Pilates and helped me to feel comfortable. You should have seen me the first time I tried to get my feet in those straps on the Pilates machine – not a pretty sight! Mike was patient and thorough and I learned that Pilates Reformer was as much of a mind focus with my “core” as it was in the physical movements. I now had some routines and discipline in my exercise schedule.

Cornerstone’s scheduled classes gave me the discipline I needed to get started and stay on track. My routine has now evolved into one day a week of personal training with Bob Lonsdale on the IM=X Reformer machines at the TreeHouse, two days of the week remain spinning with Susan, one day of Pilates Reformer and the other days of the week I am working on strength training and toning with weight lifting and cardio work on the elliptical machines. I have discovered that I enjoy exercise and I am at the gym 6 to 7 days a week.

I had the opportunity to have my annual physical exam in May. Last year my triglycerides were at 296. Yikes! My cholesterol was at 199…not good either. This year, after exercising at Cornerstone and changing my diet (I have been flowing the Flat Belly Diet published by Prevention Magazine and Organic Gardening) I have lost 26 pounds and my triglycerides have dropped to 107. My cholesterol levels have dropped to 156. I have never felt better. My body is getting stronger and I feel great. I have to buy all new clothes – a great problem to have. I was an extra large and a large size in almost everything I wore. Now I am a Medium size in most clothes. My pants size has gone from a 40/42 waist to a 34 waist!

I still have a few more pounds to go to get to my goal weight (8 pounds to be exact)! But I feel confident in my ability to manage my eating habits, maintain my exercise routine and I am learning patience when it comes to losing weight. Thanks to everyone at Cornerstone to helping me get healthy and stay that way.

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for creating such an incredible health club experience! I love Cornerstone & The Treehouse so much, they are such an important part of my life. When I first limped into Cornerstone a year ago, my body was battered from a lengthy battle with breast cancer. A bilateral mastectomy, painful reconstruction, and 30 rounds of chemotherapy had ravaged my body. Always into health and fitness, and a longtime vegan, I was distraught when the effects of chemo-induced menopause, steroid treatment and hormone therapy left me 20 pounds heavier than I was before cancer. On top of that, chemo left me with neuropathy/nerve damage in my feet, making it almost impossible to do certain exercises due to the pain.

At Cornerstone, I found my way back to fitness. And, while I didn’t lose the weight I gained, I look and feel a hundred times better. The friendly, helpful, encouraging staff was great, and I slowly put one foot in front of the other and came back to health. The Treehouse was a dream come true, as I’d been going to local yoga studios in addition to Cornerstone to get my yoga “fix.” From being unable to stand on my nerve damaged feet, I re-learned balance through yoga. from being unable to lift my arms up post-surgery, I re-learned how strong I could be through Octagon classes. From being winded from the effects of chemo, I re-learned endurance in Julie’s boot camp classes. The 20/20/20 classes have further helped rebuild me from top to bottom, but more importantly, from the inside out. These classes have brought me peace and confidence!

I have belonged to fitness clubs, pilates studios, yoga studios, and the like for the last 2 decades. And I have to say that Bob Lonsdale is a standout fitness professional. With his pleasant demeanor, fantastic sense of humor, and incredible knowledge of fitness, he makes every class a pleasure. One of my heartiest post-cancer chuckles came during a yoga class Bob taught in the gym, before the Treehouse. I remember silently thanking him for reminding me to laugh, and be light in the moment. I thank Bob and the rest of the Cornerstone Team for making my life whole again through fitness. Thanks again to Cornerstone for literally being the “cornerstone” of my health, well-being, and personal happiness each day.

We joined Cornerstone in February 1998 after Warren retired. Both of us wanted to stay healthy and active in “our golden” years. Being able to keep limber, maintain a healthy weight, balance and develop muscles “but not look like a body builder” was how I think I explained my goal when I first joined. We have come faithfully for almost 11 years!

We’ve each have had several health battles to deal with and we continued to workout in spite of them. There was a time that I would roll into the gym in a wheelchair and do my workout sitting because of an Achilles sprain and foot problem. They told me my determination was an inspiration to all! Warren had Triple bypass surgery 2 years ago the Cardiologist couldn’t get over how strong his heart was even though 3 major arteries were almost completely blocked. His doctor said “If he hadn’t been working out for the past ten years he would have had a major coronary and might not still be with us.” Warren attributes that to his years here at Cornerstone doing the cardiovascular machines and weight training. With each health challenge the Fitness staff would be so helpful in revising exercise programs to meet our current challenge.

In May 2007, we sold our family home in Buckingham and moved to Ann’s Choice in Warminster. It was a longer driving distance to the club, and Ann’s Choice offered a fitness center. We reluctantly cancelled our membership at Cornerstone in November 2007. During this time, I became very depressed and was referred to a psychologist. For several months, I just couldn’t get out of the fog I was in. February 2008, I asked Warren if we could rejoin Cornerstone. He said, “if that will make you happy, sure!” We were there that day to rejoin. Truly, it was like coming home again! The staff is so helpful, friendly and comforting. Everyone was happy to see us back. While we still use the facility at Ann’s choice on occasion, I find it’s just better at Cornerstone – the equipment, the people and atmosphere. I can get a much better workout with that kind of motivation around me. Warren claims, “Being at Cornerstone is kind of like Cheers where everyone knows your name and is glad you came.”

Sincerely,

In my experience the hardest part about working out is staying motivated and getting the results you are looking for. I’m doing The Octagon and it has provided me both.

I’ve belonged to a number of gyms in the past and have always felt like I had to go the gym, rather than want to go. A successful workout program starts with the trainers. Felipe and Leah give you the motivation you are looking for and if you can’t push yourself, they are more than happy to do it for you. The Octagon is a unique experience. Each session is different than the one before and each will challenge you in a fun atmosphere that will make you want to come back and see what is next. The trainers get you excited, the Octagon gets you the results.

My wife and I have been training with Leah and Felipe for a while. This adds to the motivation of wanting to go to the gym. Personal training is an extension to the Octagon since it incorporates exercises that coincide with a training program they develop specifically for you. I never thought I would find myself scheduling a golf tee time around an octagon class or personal training session! I really enjoy the sessions, the classes and the results.

I joined Cornerstone Clubs in November with a very specific goal… I wanted to be able to fit back into my wedding dress for my 10th wedding anniversary in May. So to that end I loaded up my iPod with workout music and I jumped on the treadmill. I hadn’t seriously worked out in 6 years since I had had my daughter, so I used the excuse to myself that I was building up my stamina by coming a couple times a week to the gym, walking on the treadmill and lifting a few weights. I avoided eye contact with Jim, Leah and Felipe because I just knew they would push me harder, and they just didn’t understand that I was building up my stamina. After two months, I hadn’t built up any more stamina, and I had actually gained a few pounds. I was at the stage where traditionally I would have given up the club. I needed something transformational, not just a maintenance routine.

But then I finally made eye contact with Leah. She told me about Octagon. I had no experience with it because to me the earth ended at the doors that went into the Group Fitness rooms. I made some self deprecating comment and Leah made it clear that I was selling myself short. I realized I hadn’t made eye contact with them because I thought they just wanted to sign me up for things but in that moment it became clear to me that I WAS selling myself short. They had more confidence in my abilities than I did. They truly were enrolled in the possibility of my fitness. I went to Octagon that Friday! I worked hard, I hurt and I was tired, but I, the girl who thought of herself as the one picked last for kickball, did it! The following week I signed up for Octagon and supporting classes because Octagon revealed for me where I needed to strengthen. I felt unstoppable. I was willing to try any class even if I had to start slow and build up. Everyone has to start somewhere. Over the weeks I have used Octagon as my core workout and all of the spokes on my fitness wheel support my continued improvement in Octagon. Every week I can feel myself improving my core strength, my endurance, and my form. I couldn’t have imagined that getting off the treadmill could make such a difference, there’s definitely a metaphor in that.

As far as fitting in my dress? I surpassed that goal. Instead of just fitting in the dress, which I did achieve after 4 weeks of my new routine, I’m celebrating my anniversary stronger, healthier and more confidant than I was 10 years ago…maybe in my whole life!

Thank you all very much for all the time and energies you clearly invested in planning such a rewarding day for our group! Everyone had a marvelous time! Some of the classes were totally new (and challenging) formats for us, such as the Octagon training system. We appreciated how much your instructors tailored the day’s activities to cyclists’ specific needs. If I may echo Saul, it was fun, entertaining and yes, even educational.

I enjoyed meeting the other “retreaters”! The staff at Cornerstone planned an excellent program for us. I was re-acquainted with some old muscles that are still making their presence known. We really enjoyed the day!

My Cornerstone story begins in 1998. I had recently moved to the area and a new friend of mine encouraged me to come with her to the club. I was apprehensive because fitness hadn’t been a big part of my life. I had battled my weight and various health issues since childhood, and had exercised at times in my teens and twenties in an attempt to lose weight. But I never stuck with the diets or exercise.

So I went to Cornerstone, having heard that it was very family-friendly, which appealed to me since my daughter was not quite three years old and would need to be in the playroom. I decided to join, figuring that I’d have the support of my friend. At first I felt a little out of place and intimidated, and in very poor condition. In fact, I felt that way for a while. If the staff hadn’t been so kind and helpful I probably would have quit. But I kept plugging away with the help of the fitness and group exercise staff. I also found the front desk and playroom staff to be friendly and very customer service oriented which helped a lot.

My first workouts were on the fitness floor. Just some light weights and cardio. I gradually increased my cardio endurance and strength. I did a few group exercise classes and was excited to learn Pilates when they started that program. I also educated myself on nutrition and altered my diet. Over time I went down two dress sizes. I was happy with the progress I had made and felt great when I was at Cornerstone.

Then in 2006 I found out that Cornerstone was opening a club in New Hope. I was excited because it was only a few miles from my home. At that time I was no longer working in Information Technology, so I asked to become a part of the Cornerstone team. I knew how it felt to have my day be brighter because I had visited Cornerstone, and I wanted to be able to help others have the same experience.

Since becoming a staff member I have continued to learn about nutrition and fitness. One day I decided that I needed to take my fitness to the next level. I did a personal training session, and after being amazed that I had survived, realized that I hadn’t been working hard enough. I continued to train weekly in addition to taking group exercise classes and working out on the fitness floor. I paid even closer attention to what I ate. And I lost two more dress sizes.

I think fitness is a work in progress. There is always something to work toward improving. I’m so glad that Cornerstone will be there to help me.

I’m your average guy. I’m a senior manager for a manufacturing company. I had a lot of stress and ate a lot of bad food. I didn’t really think about taking care of myself.

I graduated West Point in 1984 at 127 pounds and ran a few marathons and did a lot of power lifting back then. As time went on, and life got stressful, I dealt with my stress by eating.

Exercise and activity wasn’t something I had time for. At first, it was Ok that I gained some weight. When I gained more, I rationalized that it was just the way it was due to my job and stress level. When I gained even more, it got to be almost embarrassing – ridiculous even, that this was what I had let happen to me. I had more than doubled my body mass to 267 pounds in just 14 years.

My doctor told me I was lining myself up for a host of health issues, including adult onset diabetes, which my father suffered from. I decided after Thanksgiving 08, that I was at the end of the line and needed do something.

My wife, Elaine, is a fitness fanatic. She’s been a member at Cornerstone for 3 years and takes a lot of group classes. She dragged me into spinning. Upon meeting me, the instructor Julie, told me to do “what I could” and just try to “get through it”. It wasn’t easy, but I did finish the class.

That was basically all it took. Every time I came into Cornerstone, I met another instructor or staff member who continued to motivate me to just “do what I could.” And what I could do, got better and better each time. I continued to take group exercise classes and the motivation and energy kept me going. My new rule was just to get to the club. I just had to walk in the door. Once I was there, the instructors carried me through the rest.

In 6 months, I have lost 70 pounds. The more important part is, I side stepped a whole host of health issues. My blood pressure is down, my stress is being managed through exercise and I rarely even think about a junk food fix. I feel much more balanced and confident with myself. I sleep better and my wife will tell you that she sleeps better too. I no longer snore. I didn’t do anything fanatical. I’m not on some crazy diet or in the gym for hours a day. I just got my butt in the club and decided to allow the experts to tell me what to do. The staff at Cornerstone have a lot to offer, you just have to take advantage of it. They have the right people here and such a variety of fitness classes and equipment, you can accomplish anything you want. I started to take classes at The TreeHouse and have found Bob to be an amazing teacher. I spin often with Julie and Kristin, and I’ve just started to run on the treadmill lately to change things up. I have about 15 more pounds to go to be at a weight I haven’t seen since 1994. My advice to anyone who wants to get healthier, to manage their stress, find more energy and give their wife a better night’s sleep, is just get yourself in the door and take advantage of all Cornerstone has to offer. You will see results. You can change your life.

Want to run up the largest hill in Doylestown without stopping? Add Spinning to your workout! This was just one of the many recent challenges I faced while preparing my body for THE Boston Marathon. To qualify for this marathon I worked very hard during my spinning classes; focusing on the challenges offered in both speed and hill intervals. Mary K. told me this would strengthen me and sure enough I came back to her thrilled that I totally conquered climbing Old Limekiln Road after looping the lake!

Although I have been spinning for a long time, following her cues and adjusting my spin bike to maximize my training, I saw significant improvements in my running. I have always believed cross training was the most effective way to keep my body in shape and mostly injury free. Running for me, (during race training or not), is most effective when done every other day. Because of that, I have found spinning with Mary K. to be the best and most complimentary addition to my running performance and success.

I wanted to take a moment to compliment you on your Club and Staff.

I started working with Ann Krisher in December of last year. I travel for work fairly extensively, so I needed a workout that I could realistically stick to when I was on the road with access to limited equipment. I also wanted to lose weight, and set a goal of 20 pounds with her.

Since I started working with Ann, I have lost 28 pounds! We have changed my cardio workout and expanded my weight training considerably. She has also encouraged me to start counting calories instead of getting hooked into some of the crazy diets we all hear about. She is always challenging me with new workouts that I can do whether I am at cornerstone or on the road.

This is not my first experience with a health club or a personal trainer, but the results I have gotten this time around with Ann’s coaching are way ahead of anything I have ever experienced. She has really taken my objectives to heart and taught me how to accomplish my objectives.

Thanks!
